Chile Cancels APEC Summit, Scraping Trump’s Hope to Sign the Deal with China!

The APEC summit where the “first phrase” trade deal between the U.S. and China is expected to be signed may not be happening after the unrest event in Santiago had caused President Sebastián Piñera to announce a cancellation of the summit next month.

The demonstration over the issue of inequality with protestors as many as one million marched down the streets in a peaceful demonstration over the weekend, but several protestors had turned violent, which led to the decision of canceling of the summit.

U.S. officials said that APEC does not have a backup site for the summit if such event occurred and that the Trump administration is waiting to learn whether the summit will take place somewhere else. Still, the U.S. is trying to finalize the trade agreement with China in the “same time frame.”
