On 5 February 2020, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted unanimously to reduce the policy rate by 0.25 percentage point from 1.25 to 1.00 percent, effective immediately.
The benchmark interest rate of 1.00 percent is a fresh record low for Thailand.
The MPC lowered rates twice last year, 25 basis points each, and has been proceeding cautiously since then amid worries about excess liquidity and debt, and in the interest of keeping some policy space in case things turn considerably worse.
