WHO Points U.S. Having a Potential to Become the 3rd Global Epicenter of Covid-19

The United States recorded a biggest daily rise of Covid-19 infected cases of 11,000 on Tuesday, leading a total figures to 54,935. On the same day a World Health Organization (WHO) spokesperson Margaret Harris has told reporters that 85% of previous day’s an additional cases were in the U.S. and Europe and 40% of those new confirmeds were in the U.S.

Regarding to the current outbreak, WHO saw the U.S. as a nation with potential to overtake a global epicenter of coronavirus pandemic due to a “very large acceleration” in infections situation after China and European region.

Harris was asked whether the United States could become the new epicenter and she said,  “We are now seeing a very large acceleration in cases in the U.S. So it does have that potential. We cannot say that is the case yet but it does have that potential.”

“…They (the United States) have a very large outbreak and an outbreak that is increasing in intensity,” Harris added.

However, there is a positive signal such as more comprehensive testing, and further efforts to isolate the sick and trace the immediate contacts exposed to the virus.

She also mentioned Italy that “There is a glimmer of hope there. We’ve seen in the last two days fewer new cases and deaths in Italy but it’s very, very early days yet.”
