WHO Warns Covid-19 Situation “Worsening” Worldwide as Mass Gathering Starts to Resume


WHO said coronavirus situation is ‘worsening’ worldwide after the number of Covid-19 cases on Sunday hit an all-time high and mass gatherings are starting to resume in some countries.

The World Health Organization addressed on Monday that although the situation in Europe is improving but globally is worsening as more than 136,000 cases had been reported on nine of the past 10 days and on Sunday (June 7) the coronavirus cases has reached the highest daily record. 

About 75% of last Sunday cases come from 10 countries, which mostly in Americas and South Asia, said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

While most African nations are still experiencing an increase in Covid-19 cases as well as in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, he added.

Despite the situation in several countries is showing a positive signs, but at the same time these countries are threatened by “complacency” as research shows that most people are still susceptible to contracting Covid-19, Tedros said.

“In these countries, the biggest threat now is complacency,” he said. “We continue to urge active surveillance to ensure the virus does not rebound, especially as mass gatherings of all kinds are starting to resume in some countries.”

WHO also mentioned the social movements as it supports the global movement against racism and encourages those protesting around the world to keep at least one metre from others and wear mask when attend the protest.     

Infections globally have passed 7.1 million and deaths have passed 400,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.
