US House Passes $25Bn Bill to Fund the Postal Service, Ensuring Ballots Arrive in Time
The US House of Representatives on Saturday passed the bill to fund $25 billion into the Postal Service (USPS) ahead of the presidential election in November and would also block cuts and changes that have raised concerns over mail-in ballots.
Upcoming election on November 3, will be the first for all Americans to be allowed to vote by mail, however the USPS worries that the vast majority of the states cannot guarantee the in-time delivery to be counted.
The Democratic-led House of Representative passed the bill in a vote of 257 to 150 to ensure that the mail-in voting will arrive in time to be counted in an election amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, as well as prioritize all ballots as first-class mail.
President Donald Trump strongly opposes mail-in voting, citing the possibility of widespread voter fraud despite there being no evidence for this.
US Postal Service has been struggling financially following a decline in mail volume. Moreover, USPS is facing a delay in delivery, which was blamed on the lack of staff because of the coronavirus outbreak.
