CPF Launches Energy-Saving Projects to Be Part of “Greenhouse Gas Reducing Campaign”

CPF has announced five key energy-saving projects to reduce greenhouse gas

Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CPF) has concentrated on five key projects targeting on energy saving by 43.45 million megajoules (MJ) and equivalent to more than 76,000 tons CO2 greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction in 2019.

Mr. Charubutr Kird-udom, Assiatant Vice President of CPF for Safety Health Environment and Energy (SHE-En) of CPF, said the energy saving and greenhouse gas reduction is one of CPF’s priority concern to save environment. Last year, CPF has stepped forward on five projects focusing on energy and environmental saving.

Those projects involve the cooperation with Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency to improve energy consumption efficiently in the cooling system and air conditioning system totaling, involving 31 projects covered four business groups, including broiler chicken, processed food, layer hen and pig business. This is equivalent to 6,183 tons CO2 greenhouse gas reduction.
Others included solar rooftop project, focusing on installing solar cells on manufacturing roof to produce electricity. The project targets to generate the electricity of 40 megawatts and will create the equivalent to GHG reduction of 28,000 tons CO2. The reduction is also equivalent to the growing of 1.44 million teak trees. The project is drawn to decrease CPF energy cost as well.

The purchasing of electricity from Gulf Power Plant, which it produce from natural gas. This project covered three manufacturing plants including Nong Kare Feed Mill, Saraburi Food Processing Plant and Broiler Chicken Processing Plant (Saraburi). It is forecast to help reduce equivalent to GHG reduction by 10,644 tons CO2.
Moreover, CPF’s biomass project is drawn to replace the use of charcoal. CPF Feed Mill (Ratchaburi) has already applied the biomass project to reduce equivalent to GHG of 11,229 tons CO2. Also, the biomass project at layer hen complex which draws to reduce equivalent GHG of 20,239 tons CO2.

“It is estimated that all those five projects will completely operate within 2019 to reduce energy consumption of 43.45 million megajoules per year, decreased by 0.42% and the equivalent to GHG reduction of 76,000 tons, down by 8.66%  compared with the based year in 2015 respective,” said Mr.Charubutr.
During 2015-2017, there were 184 projects of energy saving and GHG reduction projects had been launched. It helped reduce energy utilization by 133,760 gigajoules while reduce GHG emission equivalent to 27,108 ton CO2.

Mr.Charubutr added that CPF also encourages all of its farms and processing plants to undertake GHG reduction by growing more plants to increase green areas. By this way, CPF has participated in activities under Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization). CPF’s Food Processing Plant (Pad Rhiew) and Aquaculture Processing Plant (Mahachai) have further operated Carbon Footprint for Organization for 3 consecutive years as well as Thailand Voluntary Emission Reduction.
CPF has set up four certain targets for environmental sustainability including energy, greenhouse gas, reused treated water, waste disposal to land fill. CPF has set a target to reduce consumption per production unit of energy by 15%, GHG emission by 15%, water withdrawal by 25% and waste disposal to land fill by 30%
