A Clear Sign of Hostage Taking as Beijing Detains the Third Canadian!
A third Canadian has been reportedly detained in China for security reason, while the Canadian office said that the matter does not relate to the arrest of Huawei’s CFO, which may have turned into an implicit hostage taking.
On December 19, 2018, the Canadian official reported that China authority had detained another Canadian citizen, which was the third one after the arrest of Ms. Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s Chief Financial Officer and the daughter of Huawei’s president.
Ms. Meng had been released on a bailout, and currently on surveillance and an ankle tracking device.
While the name of the third detainee had not yet been revealed, officials believed that the case was not related to the arrest of Ms. Meng. A former diplomat, Michael Kovrig, and a Canadian businessman, Michael Spavor, were detained by China earlier this month.
Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Wednesday that “we suspect the case is very different from the first two cases”, referring to the circumstances surrounding Mr. Kovrig and Mr. Spavor’s detention. Still, he mentioned that he was “very concern” in these cases.
The US President Donald Trump said last week that he would intervene with Ms. Meng’s case if it led to a positive outcome on the trade deal with China. Later, Canada reminded Trump not to intervene its extradition with its political issues.
While the Canadian publicly denied the connection of the arrest with the detentions in China, Beijing had threatened unspecified consequences if Ms. Meng was not released.
