May Barely Survives Confidence Vote with Evident Political Issues in Parliament

Theresa May won Labour’s no confidence vote while British lawmakers are waiting for May to present her next step by Monday.

The British Prime Minister Theresa May survived the confidence vote in parliament on January 16, 2019, with 325 to 306 votes. It has been about 24 hours after MPs unapproved May’s Brexit deal with a landslide 432-202 votes against her.

May is due to come back in parliament with a motion setting out her next steps toward the deal. The deadline for this would be the end of next Monday.

As the deadline to leave EU draws near with a little more than two months, Britain could come up with a new deal which would be the easiest way, but what it seems to be like a political issue within Britain herself making it more difficult to get approvals from MPs.

It is clear that the House does not support this deal, but tonight’s vote tells us nothing about what it does support,” said May after her Brexit deal was crushed.

The main problem with May’s deal was said to be the one with British backstop, which is the last resort to maintain an open border on the island of Ireland in the event that the UK leaves the EU without securing an all-encompassing deal. That would leave the Republic of Ireland to be with EU, and Northern Ireland to be with the UK while the border is still wide open.

UK will leave EU without a deal if they can not agree on the deal. While delaying the Brexit date is also possible, but approval from EU is required.
