Huawei Fires a Salvo at US Gov’t over Equipment Ban, Holding Trade Talk as Hostage
Huawei reportedly sued the U.S. government over the ban of federal agencies and their contractors from procuring Huawei’s telecommunication equipment.
On August 2018, the U.S. President Donald Trump, cited national security concerns, banned federal agencies and their contractors from procuring Huawei’s telecommunication equipment along with another Chinese firm, ZTE, while claimed that both companies products could be used for espionage.
Earlier today, Huawei reportedly sued the U.S. government over the matter, stated that the company had filed a complaint in a federal court in Texas, challenging the constitutionality of Section 889 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a section signed into law by Trump in August.
Huawei Deputy Chairman Guo Ping said the US Congress had failed to present “any evidence” for its ban on Huawei products and equipment, thus, the act of Section 889 was unconstitutional.
“This ban not only is unlawful, but also restricts Huawei from engaging in fair competition, ultimately harming U.S. consumers. We look forward to the court’s verdict, and trust that it will benefit both Huawei and the American people,” added Guo Ping. “Lifting the NDAA ban will give the U.S. Government the flexibility it needs to work with Huawei and solve real security issues.”
Asides from the banned issue, Huawei did not mention anything related to the case of Mrs. Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of Huawei’s founder Ren Zhengfei, who was arrested in Canada by the request of Washington on December 2018 over an illegal of trade sanctions against Iran.
Currently, Mrs. Wanzhou had been released on a bailout, and currently on surveillance and an ankle tracking device. Moreover, she recently sued the Canadian government for procedural wrongs in her arrest.
Although the case of Mrs. Wanzhou had subsided, the issue still posted as a major factor when it comes to US-China relation, especially to the trade talk that Trump was trying to find an agreement with China, and reportedly to enter the final stage of the talk.
