U.N. Condemns Saudi a “Mockery” to Justice after Sentence 5 Pawns to Death over Khashoggi Case.
On Monday, December 24, 2019, Saudi Arabia sentenced five people to death and three to jail over the murder of the U.S. journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was last seen at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October last year.
On June 19, 2019, it had been reported that a U.N. rights investigator said that the evidence, which was said to receive from Turkish authorities, suggested Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman (Mbs) and other senior Saudi officials were liable for the murder of Khashoggi.
The 100-page report had been sent to Saudi Arabia, but there is not any response from the country only denying the accusations of the involvement of the price.
However, the findings were rejected by the Saudi court by ruling that the killing was not premeditated, but carried out “at the spur of the moment”.
The special rapporteur on extrajudicial from the U.N., Agnes Callamard, who had said that the prince is liable for this murder, accused the trial verdict from the Saudi court a “mockery” of justice by sacrificing its pawns to save the mastermind which could possibly go free.
“The hit-men are guilty, sentenced to death. The masterminds not only walk free, they have barely been touched by the investigation and the trial,” tweeted Agnes Callamard.
There has yet to be reported if the verdicts will be appealed.
