“Carrie Lam” Assures Hongkongers of No Effect on Rights and Freedom from Beijing’s Laws.
Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said on Tuesday that the new national security laws proposed by Beijing will not affect the city’s rights and freedom of people in Hong Kong.
The protest in Hong Kong was halted for a few months due to the coronavirus outbreak. Now, Hong Kong pro-democracy supporters started to protest again over Beijing’s national security laws, in which China did not put an in depth detail of what the laws will be, but the draft proposal appeared to be aiming at terrorist activities.
Carrie Lam made an appearance in the press conference to assure that the new national security laws proposed by Beijing will not affect the city’s rights and freedom of people in Hong Kong. She also asked protesters to wait and see the details of the legislation.
“In the last 23 years, whenever people worried about Hong Kong’s freedom of speech and freedom of expression and protest, time and again, Hong Kong has proven that we uphold and preserve those values,” said Lam in the conference.
“The best thing is to see the legislation in front of us and to understand why at this point in time Hong Kong needs this piece of legislation,” she added.
