Worldwide Coronavirus Cases Top 18 Million as Countries Fail to Contain the Spreading

The record of coronavirus cases worldwide topped 18 million on Monday as the spread continued to increase at a rapid pace, while some countries faced the second wave of the coronavirus outbreak.

 

As of Monday, August 3, 2020, the confirmed coronavirus cases recorded at 18.03 million with 686,741 deaths, according to the Reuters’ tally.

The U.S. remained the world’s number one in both categories with 4.6 million confirmed cases and 155,343 deaths. Brazil, India, Russia and South Africa came in at number 2-5, respectively.

 

Meanwhile, some countries are struggling to contain the second wave of the outbreak. Cases started to rise in Germany with 955 new cases recorded on Saturday and 870 on Friday. Moreover, nearly 20,000 anti-mask protesters gathered in Berlin on Saturday against the government’s mandate on wearing face masks.

 

On Sunday in Australia, Victoria state imposed fresh restrictions, including a curfew in Melbourne for the next six weeks, a ban on wedding gatherings as well as an order for schools and universities to return to online sessions.

 

In the U.S., Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus task force coordinator, warned that the US is in a new phase in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic, stating the the virus started to spread to rural area.
