The U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told Greta Thunberg, the climate activist, to study economy before lecturing on fossil fuel investment in World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Thursday Mnuchin was asked whether the U.S., as the world’s largest economy, should completely and immediately divest from fossil fuels following the call of Thunberg on the world’s decision-makers and business leaders to stop all investment in fossil fuel exploration and extraction immediately. “Is she the chief economist or who is she? I’m confused,” Mnuchin said, before adding this was “a joke. That was funny.” “After she goes and studies economics in college she can come back and explain that to us,” Mnuchin added. Thunberg has reacted on her official twitter account, “My gap year ends in August, but it doesn’t take a college degree in economics to realise that our remaining 1,5° carbon budget and ongoing fossil fuel subsidies and investments don’t add up,” “So either you tell us how to achieve this mitigation or explain to future generations and those already affected by the climate emergency why we should abandon our climate commitments.” She wrote via the twitter. The global climate crisis was a main issue at the 2020 World Economic Forum. “Our house is still on fire, your inaction is fuelling the flames by the hour” Thumberg spoke on the opening day of the forum. Meanwhile the US President Donald Trump has addressed that the United States will join an initiative to plant a trillion trees to preserve the God’s creation and the world natural beauty, but the majority of his speech was about the importance of the oil and gas industries.
